We got a bull! Well technically he’s not ours. H We got a bull!

Well technically he’s not ours. He belongs to our neighbour and he is only here for a booty call to breed our milk cow Merry.

So grateful for our neighbours who raised Romeo and our other neighbour for letting him come live with us until Merry is bred.

Breeding our Jersey milk cows has been challenging. They go into heat every 21 days but it always seems like it is in the evening or when Wayne is working or the weather is -30C and we miss the window to get her to our other neighbour’s bull. So…we’ll see if this method works better.

Getting grounded in the winter is a little more challenging but if you can find an animal who is walking around outside, you can get grounded just by petting them.

What do you do to stay grounded in the winter?

Twin grandsons got a ride in our calf sled on Sund Twin grandsons got a ride in our calf sled on Sunday afternoon.

Calf sleds are used when a calf is born in the pasture in the winter and its little wet body needs to get in a warm barn asap.

Apparently they can also be used to show our 17 month old identical twin grandsons around the farmyard. 🥰

Today was dairy processing day. The fridge was ge Today was dairy processing day. The fridge was getting full, so I started with 5 gallons of raw milk from our family milk cows. I began by skimming off the cream. The first half gallon of cream made 2 1/4 cups of butter which I store in the freezer. Another 2 cups of cream went towards making egg nog ice cream. Every week I make a pound of cottage cheese and a double batch of yogurt. Finally, using 2 gallons of skimmed milk, I started a batch of mozzarella. The balance of the milk and cream is for drinking and coffee cream throughout the week.
