Description
Do you like to bake for your family? Are you looking for non-GMO wheat grown without herbicides and pesticides? You’re in the right place!
Our Hard Red Spring Wheat is grown on a neighbour’s family farm. No herbicides or pesticides. No Glyphosate. Just what grown the way it was meant to be grown.
The wheat’s high protein content (approximately 14.6%) helps bread to rise better.
If you don’t have a mill, you can use mine and mill your wheat into flour before you take it home. Freshly milled flour makes excellent baked goods that are higher in nutrients than store-bought flour.
What is Non-GMO Wheat
Genetically modified (GM) wheat is not grown in Canada. However, GM crops that are grown in Canada include canola, corn, soy, and sugar beets. Therefore, all wheat grown in Canada is non-GMO. Whew!
For a list of GM crops and foods in the Canadian market, please see https://cban.ca/
What is Glyphosate
Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in Canada. You can read more about it right here: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/consumer-product-safety/reports-publications/pesticides-pest-management/fact-sheets-other-resources/glyphosate.html
Monsanto is the manufacturer of Glyphosate, which is also known by the common name Roundup.
It is common practice for Canadian farmers to drench wheat fields prior to harvest with Glyphosate. The herbicide kills the wheat plant allowing for an earlier harvest. Applying Glyphosate before harvest causes the the less mature, green wheat, to mature faster and thereby getting a bigger harvest. The herbicide is not just for killing weeds: it is for killing the wheat plant prior to harvest (locking in some of the herbicide in the kernels.)
When Canadian consumers eat wheat-based products like bread, muffins, and pasta, they are undoubtedly eating Glyphosate residue. In fact, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has determined Maximum Residue Limits grain fit for human consumption which means they acknowledge that there IS residue on the grain. See https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/consumer-product-safety/reports-publications/pesticides-pest-management/fact-sheets-other-resources/glyphosate.html
Is it the gluten?
Some folks find bread products hard to digest and often blame gluten. However, unless you a diagnosed celiac, it may just be that you are sensitive to Glyphosate. The herbicide has been shown to disrupt natural gut bacteria and has even been shown to be carcinogenic in rats. https://ehjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12940-025-01187-2
There is currently a Canadian class action lawsuit against Monsanto which alleges that Glyphosate is responsible for non-Hodkins lymphoma. https://www.producer.com/news/glyphosate-class-action-moves-forward-in-canada/
How to avoid toxic wheat
If you want to avoid toxic wheat, I recommend buying a bag of our unsprayed wheat kernels to see how your body reacts.
Five pounds of wheat kernels for $6. And you are welcome to use my mill to grind it into flour, if you don’t own a mill.
