Hi, I’m Lorie. My husband, Wayne, and I live on a 16 acre farm in central Alberta, Canada. We are first generation farmers.

Wayne and I grew up in the city but always had a love for nature. Wayne has fond memories of his summer visits to his aunt and uncle’s farm in Saskatchewan. Since I was a little girl I wanted to be surrounded with animals and live in the county. As a young adult, I dreamed of living off the land. I am a crunchy mom who has been baking homemade bread, serving nutritious meals, canning and freezing produce, and searching for herbal remedies for my family’s aches and pains for my whole adult life.

In the city, Wayne and I first learned permaculture principles when we sheet-mulched our lawn and turned our large, pie-shaped yard into a fruit forest with raised-beds for our vegetables. We were urban farmers and were in the process of getting backyard chickens. However, we realized that our yard still couldn’t produce the volume of food we needed for our family of six.

In January 2022, we followed our hearts, moved to rural Alberta, and became homesteaders. We needed more space to grow our own food so that we could be less dependent on the grocery store and have more control over the quality of food we were eating. God gave us this simple mission: to feed ourselves and share our abundance with others while regenerating the land, honouring the animals that feed us, and building community.

Homesteading is about becoming more self-sufficient in all areas. From learning about raising chickens and cows, expanding our garden to grow enough food for a year, learning how to repair a broken barbed wire fence, and all the other aspects of running a farm while both working full time has been a steep learning curve! It is exhausting and invigorating, often all in the same day!

From our online farm store, we sell free-range eggs and grass-fed beef. We offer seasonal on-site workshops. And in a few years, we will open our fruit forest up as a u-pick.
