How the birds are raised

We desire to leave this land better than when we came, so we have adopted a rotational grazing plan for our meat birds!

We purchase our chicks from a local hatchery that does not vaccinate their chicks.

After 3 weeks in a cozy brooder, the chicks are moved to live out the next 7 weeks of their lives in a chicken tractor.  These enclosures allow us to move them daily onto fresh, herbicide-free pasture so that they can forage for grass, bugs, sunlight, and fresh air.  Meanwhile, their manure and natural scratching leaves a positive impact on the pasture, regenerating it for next year’s chickens.

Our chickens receive a mix of organic grain ration that does not have any soy, corn, nor any medications in it.

One of the results of using chickens to regenerate the land is that the nutritional quality of the chicken meat is dramatically improved.

How the animals are butchered

We honour our animals by asking our local licensed mobile butcher to slaughter on-site. This way there is minimal stress hormone released into the meat.

The butcher plucks the feathers and cleans the insides so that the bird is ready for you to roast.  The chickens are shrink wrapped in freezer bags and then weighed.  You take home the fresh birds and you freeze them in your freezer.  (Birds can be pieced out for an extra charge.)

If you would like to keep your necks, livers or gizzards, just let us know.

Note:  these chickens are un-inspected and not for resale.

If you prefer, you can also save the cost of the butcher and come to the farm, rent our equipment, and butcher your birds yourself.

What do the chickens cost?

  • The butchered weight of the whole chickens will be between around 6-8 lbs. We find this is the ideal size to feed our family of four adults plus have leftovers.
  • The price of $6.50 per pound will be applied after the butcher weighs the birds.  Note, we do not include the neck or giblets in the weight, so you are only paying for the bird.  (If you want these pieces, let us know and we can include them for free.)
  • This means the birds range between $39 – $52 each.
  • We require a minimum order of 5 birds and a $50 deposit per order.
  • Finished birds need to be picked up from the farm on the day of butcher (we don’t have enough freezers).
  • Butcher dates are around the third week of July and the third week of September.
