Dairy cows need their hooves trimmed about every six months. Like our fingernails, their hooves keep growing and need to be shaped and any abscesses or rocks need to be cleaned out.

There are two kinds of chutes. One is a tilt table where the cow is strapped in and then tilted on its side. It is safe but not my preference. The other way is to use a hoof trimming chute like shown here. The cow remains upright and one foot at a time is lifted for the trim.

Hoof trimmers are hard to find around here and I’m so grateful that one of our neighbours invited us to bring our family milk cows down for a pedicure. #hooftrimming #familymilkcow #camrosecounty #haylakes #homesteading #homesteadinglife

I also checked inside his mouth to make sure there were no quills in there.

Little Northern Saw-Whet owl has decided to make our chicken coop his second home. He shows up every few days and then leaves. Normally they migrate, but he decided he likes Alberta winters! Haha.

We are happy to have him. Although I doubt the sparrows feel the same way!

First ponytail in 4 weeks! I broke my collarbone $First ponytail in 4 weeks! I broke my collarbone while we were vacationing in Mexico in December. We were cycling in the morning and by lunch the waves had slammed me to the ocean floor. 💔 Mexican healthcare was amazing. The sling helped immobilize the fracture and it has been healing. Praise Yeshua our healer. 🙏 I’m also super grateful for awesome neighbours who are helping me do chores. Milking would have been impossible without them. 😘 Every movement was painful including getting dressed and brushing my hair. I rendered the tallow harvested from our grass fed

I rendered the tallow harvested from our grass fed beef to make this luxurious anti-aging moisturizer.

Tallow is the fat around a ruminant animal’s kidneys (not fat trim which is suet).

Rendered and whipped, grass-fed tallow has vitamins A, D, E and K as well as conjugated linoleum acid all of which are excellent for skin health.

I whipped mine with jojoba oil which is also excellent for skin care. And I added essential oils which are fantastic for skin: lavender, geranium, sandalwood and frankincense.
